Today, December 8th, marks 30 years since the departure of one of the greatest icons in the history of Brazilian music. It was on December 8, 1994 that Brazil lost Antônio Carlos Jobim. Responsible for hits such as Garota de Ipanema and Águas de Março and with partnerships with Elis Regina and Frank Sinatra (in addition to the iconic double with Vinicius de Moraes), Tom Jobim has already been the subject of many content on EBC.
In the same vein, December 10th is a day of memory for the Ceará singer and composer Ermenegildo Evangelista de Souza, known as Catulo de Paula. His death marks 40 years on this date. In 2024, the Origins Collection broadcast one of his compositions:
On the 13th, Tião Carreiro’s birth turns 90 years old. He was one of the main names in country music in Brazil. Together with Pardinho, he formed one of the most emblematic duos of the genre, popularizing the viola pagode. In 2014, the Rural Brazil (from the National Radio) interviewed the musician’s daughter. On the occasion, Alex Marli Dias spoke about his career and recalled interesting facts. In 2018, it was the Stay Connected (TV Brasil) who spoke about the musician:
In addition to paying tribute to musicians, the week has other commemorative and awareness-raising dates. Today, December 8th, is Our Lady of Conception Day. In some cities in Brazil (such as Belo Horizonte, Salvador and Recife) it is a public holiday. The date that honors the saint was the subject of the National Radio Agency in 2023:
The 10th has two dates that refer to rights: the International Human Rights Day and the International Animal Rights Day. The first date is a celebration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (which occurred in 1948). The second came in the wake of the first to emphasize respect and protection for non-human species. Both were highlights of the Reporter Brazilrespectively, in 2020 and 2018:
To close the week, we have National Visually Impaired Day on December 13th. The date, created in 1961 by then president Jânio Quadros, highlights the importance of inclusion and the rights of people with visual impairments. In 2015, the Special Program (TV Brasil) had an edition dedicated to the date that pays homage to people who cannot see or have low vision:
