Today is the Day: Tom Jobim and Bossa Nova are highlights

This week, from the 23rd to the 29th of January, Hoje é Dia recalls one of the biggest names in Brazilian popular music: Antônio Carlos Jobim, known as Tom Jobim. Birth of Tom Jobim

On this January 25th, conductor Antônio Carlos Jobim, better known for Tom Jobim, would be 95 years old. As one of the exponents of bossa nova, Tom marked Brazilian music with elements of Jazz and compositions that to this day are remembered by many in the world. Among them are March waters, Just had to be with you, both with the late Elis Regina, and the eternal girl from Ipanema, re-recorded even by the North American Frank Sinatra, who considered him a genius.

National Bossa Nova Day

Also on January 25th, Bossa Nova Day is celebrated. The musical genre is derived from samba and emerged in the 1950s from the demands of a generation of young people who were looking for music more in line with what they lived in Rio de Janeiro at that time. Conceived by Antônio Carlos Jobim, Vinícius de Moraes and João Gilberto in the rhythm, bossa nova brought a simplification of the carioca samba, with elements of the Jazz American style and compositions with lighter lyrics when compared to samba.

The music that marked the beginning of bossa nova is written by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes and is conducted by the beautiful voice of Elizabeth Cardoso, in addition to featuring João Gilberto on guitar. no more longing, from 1958, was later re-recorded in the voice of João Gilberto, gaining more notoriety. In the 1960s, bossa nova conquered Brazil and the world.

Birth of Jackson Pollock

January 28th is the birthday of American painter Jackson Pollock. He is considered one of the most influential painters of the 20th century with his artistic style somewhat different from the standards of the time. In this context, the North American’s paintings depended heavily on his body movement, creating dynamic and distinct figures. He is considered one of the forerunners of the action painting, a type of painting derived from surrealism. Pollock died at the age of 44, in 1956, in an automobile accident while driving under the influence of alcohol.

National Day Against Slave Labor

On January 28, the National Day to Combat Slave Labor is celebrated. The date commemorates three labor inspectors who were murdered on a farm in Unaí (MG) while investigating allegations of slave labor. In 2020 alone, almost a thousand people were rescued from work analogous to slavery. In this way, this date reminds and warns that thousands of people, according to the Public Ministry, are still forced to do this type of work and that this is still a reality in Brazil.

Social Security Day

January 24th is Social Security Day. This date was instituted in honor of the Eloy Chaves Law, which was approved on January 24, 1923. The law established the basis of the Brazilian social security system from the creation of the Retirement and Pension Fund for employees of railway companies. Today, social security coverage in Brazil is quite high.

Trans Day of Visibility

January 29th is Trans Visibility Day. The date was established in 2004 as part of the “Transvestite and Respect” campaign. This initiative is a milestone in the struggle for recognition of this class in Brazil. The Trans Visibility Day was also created to remember the importance of creating opportunities for the trans and transvestite population. Recently, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) guaranteed that the social name can be used in the voter registration in the next elections, as it has been done since 2018.
