The week between the 5th and the 11th of February reserves three dates that directly dialogue with the population’s awareness. On the 7th, the National Day of Struggle of Indigenous Peoples is celebrated. The date was created in 2008 and draws attention to issues related to the native peoples of Brazil – such as the Yanomami humanitarian crisis in Roraima.
In an article published in 2017, Agência Brasil listed the rights guaranteed by the 1988 Constitution to indigenous peoples. It was from then on that respect and protection for the culture of the original populations began to be guaranteed.
A 2013 episode of Reporting Paths (Indigenous Peoples: The Struggle of Forgotten Peoples), from TV Brazil, toured the country to show the struggle of indigenous people to remain in the land of their ancestors. Watch:
February 11th has two important dates for the field of science and technology. The participation of women in science has been celebrated since 2015 by the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The program Science is Everythingfrom the TV Brazilbrought an episode about the date, talking about the space that women have in the construction of scientific knowledge, in addition to bringing stories of inspiring women who helped to reach the great discoveries of science:
The other event on the 11th is the International Safer Internet Day. The date is of paramount importance to highlight issues such as data privacy, cyber threats and the good use of technology tools. A Brazil Agency already made subjects (as in 2014 It is 2021) about the subject.
Famous Writers and the Pope Who Resigned
The week also features dates dedicated to the memory of historical names in the world of literature. On February 6th, the birth of the Portuguese philosopher, writer and orator Father Antônio Vieira completes 415 years. In 2008, the program De Lá Pra Cá, on TV Brasil, reconstructed the trajectory of this character in Brazilian history:
On the 8th, the birth of the French writer Jules Verne, author of works such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea It is Journey to the center of the Earthcompletes 195 years. His story was told in 2015 by EBC Portal. On the 10th, the birth of the German playwright, poet and director Bertolt Brecht completes 125 years. In 2014, the History Todaybroadcast by National Radio Agency, summed up the life and work of Brecht:
This week marks the 10th anniversary of Joseph Ratzinger’s resignation from the papacy. It was on February 11, 2013 that Pope Benedict XVI (who died in December 2022) announced that he would step down.. It was the first resignation of a pope in the modern era. Benedict XVI, who would become known as pope emeritus, was succeeded by the current pope, Francis.
