This week that begins November has the first holiday of the month and important dates in the area of communication, in addition to the ten-year anniversary of one of the country’s biggest environmental disasters. We start with the All Souls’ Dayon November 2nd, a time for families to celebrate the memory of those who have passed away and pay homage to them.
It is an event that is most popular among followers of Catholicism, but there are also followers of other beliefs. THE All Souls’ Day was highlighted in this report by Brazil Agency and from this one National Radio Agencypublished in 2024. It was also the subject of reports in TV Brasillike this one Reporter Brazilfrom 2012, and this other one, shown on DF Reporterin 2016.
November 4th is the Favela Day. The anniversary alludes to the first time that the term “favela” appeared in a public document, in 1900. A letter sent to the chief of police in Rio de Janeiro referred, at the time, to the Morro da Providência favela.
The date is celebrated with shows, debates and joint efforts, as shown in this report from Brazil Agency and this edition of Rio Magazinefrom the National Radioboth from 2021. National Radio Agency talked about how favelas drive the economy, in a report from July this year. THE TV Brasil also highlighted the anniversary, in editions of Brazil Afternoon Reporter (2021) and the Reporter Brazil (2024).
On November 5th, the collapse of the Fundão dam, in Mariana, Minas Gerais, marks ten years. The tragedy completely destroyed the district of Bento Rodrigues, leaving 18 people dead and causing serious environmental and socioeconomic damage. One year after the incident, in 2016, the Brazil Agency highlighted that this was the biggest accident involving dams in the world in the last 100 years.
After a process that dragged on for almost a decade, this year the inhabitants affected by the disaster began to receive compensation and aid, as shown this other text from the Agencythis report from National Radio Agencyand this report from Brazil Afternoon Reporterfrom the TV Brasil.
On November 5th we also celebrate the National Portuguese Language Day. The anniversary, created in 2006, honors the birth of Ruy Barbosa, one of the best-known Brazilian writers and intellectuals of the 20th century.
THE Brazil Agency and the National Radio Agency addressed the topic in 2023, highlighting that Portuguese is the fourth most spoken language in the world. The date was also highlighted in the TV Brasilin programs Uncensoredin 2019, and Reporter Brazilthis year.
Communication
THE International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is an anniversary created by the United Nations (UN), celebrated on November 2nd. The objective is to encourage a safe environment for the work of media professionals.
THE Brazil Agency highlighted that 85% of the murders of journalists in the world go unpunished, in a report from 2024. In the Brazilian scenario, the Agency reported in this report from May this year that the number of attacks has fallen, but remains high, with 144 cases in 2024. The growth in attacks on press professionals was also the subject of this report by National Radio Agencybroadcast last year.
Amateur radio, in addition to being a hobby, is a public utility activity. Did you know that many amateur radio operators play an important role in disaster relief, helping Civil Defense as volunteers? To honor them, November 5th is the Amateur Radio Day.
THE National Radio highlighted the role of radio amateurs in Memory Radioin the 2021 edition, and in the National Amazon Afternoonin 2024. The activity was also addressed by National Radio Agency and the newspaper Reporter Brazilfrom the TV Brasilin a 2022 report.
If amateur radio is celebrated on the 5th, nothing more logical than celebrating the Broadcaster’s Day also this week, on November 7th. The anniversary is a tribute to the composer and radio broadcaster Ary Barroso, who was born on this date, in 1903, as shown in this report from Reporter Brazilfrom the TV Brasilshown in 2015.

Laughter is the best medicine
We end this edition talking about one of the best things in life: on November 6th, the National Laughter Day. Scientific studies have already proven that laughing increases hormones linked to joy and well-being, reduces the level of cortisol – known as the stress hormone – improves blood circulation and even helps increase pain tolerance.
These benefits were highlighted by National Radio in programs Long live Maryin 2023, and in Rio Magazine and National Amazon Afternoonboth broadcast in 2024.
