SANTO DOMINGO.- Today we celebrate National Youth Day and we remember the death of the Italian priest and educator, Juan Melchor Bosco, better known as “Don Bosco”, considered “Father and Teacher of the Young”.
Don Bosco served the youth throughout his life, his legacy has transcended borders and religions. For this reason, on December 5, 1993, the Law 20-93, which establishes in its article 1, January 31, National Youth Day in honor of “Don Bosco”.
This law created the National Youth Award, the highest recognition granted by the Dominican State through the Ministry of Youth to young people in the country who stand out in their communities for their contributions to the development of the nation.

The awards began to be granted from the year 1997, the most outstanding young people are recognized in different fields such as sports, student merit, social welfare, religious, political and cultural leadership.
In addition, overcoming and personal achievements, contributions to human rights, preservation of natural resources, cultural development, voluntary social services in favor of the community.
The young people who are winners in the different categories receive different prizes such as a statuette, certificate of participation, a national scholarship, a gold ring, a laptop and a financial contribution.
