To go or not to go ?: The decision that President-elect Boric must make on whether or not to accompany President Piñera to his last international tour

A whole debate has been generated on whether or not the President-elect, Gabriel Boric, should accept the invitation made by the President-in-Office, Sebastián Piñera, to accompany him on his last presidential tour in Colombia.

According to Third, last Monday, when both met in La Moneda, President Piñera extended the invitation to the elected President to participate together in Prosur and the Pacific Alliance – which will be held on January 26 and 27 – as an online signal with the tradition that has occurred in the midst of other government transfers.

So far there has not been an official decision from the command of President-elect Gabriel Boric, but there have been several pronouncements, in favor and against this trip as a whole.

The Socialist deputy, president of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies, Jaime Naranjo, said that “it does not seem prudent to participate in this meeting.”

“I think I should not go, because it is very different for an incumbent President to invite an elected President to a change of command to go on a tour, as is the case in Colombia, where he will meet with alliances, a commercial one – such as the Pacific Alliance – and another that has a clear ideological sense, which is the Prosur alliance. In such a way that I believe that President Boric is going to be very far from the Prosur alliance, and therefore, I think there will be time to define an international strategy and to be able to meet with the presidents of Latin America, “he added.

Paz Zárate, former foreign affairs adviser for Yasna Provoste, urged President-elect Gabriel Boric to attend, assuring that “it is an excellent opportunity to forge ties with a view to the change of command.” He pointed out that “the administration of Michelle Bachelet promoted the ADP, and contributed to strengthening ties with governments of different political colors (” convergence in diversity “). President-elect Gabriel Boric has an opportunity to show that Chile will maintain this State policy” .

From the ruling party, UDI senator Iván Moreira appreciated the gesture of President Piñera, but said that “there is no doubt” that Gabriel Boric will not accept the invitation. “In times of polarization it is a great republican gesture by President Piñera to invite President-elect Boric, but unfortunately on the left they do not understand republican gestures, and there is no doubt that he will not accept this invitation,” he stressed
