López Obrador with his decisions is outlining the platform for the opposition candidates who will seek to succeed him. Retaking the Texcoco airport project is already a central issue, recovering popular insurance, ensuring the supply of medicines, child care, full-time schools, among others, are already campaign promises by Enrique de la Madrid and Gabriel Quadri, only to mention those I have heard on the subject of the airport.
The issues are there, because of what the current government has done or failed to do, surely the list will grow to the extent that those who want appear. This has been observed in recent weeks, several candidates for the presidential candidacy, some mentioned by party leaders and others at their own risk. López Obrador maintains that he has the best cards, which remains to be seen. The fact is that to date there are already more than a dozen suitors, but none with a considerable advantage.
It is clear that the rival to beat will be the one chosen by the president, who will have the endorsement of Morena, with it the campaign manager who will seek to imitate Vicente Fox in 2006, of such disastrous memory for the president.
For the opponents, the construction of a platform will be the old style, with attacks on deficiencies and unfulfilled promises, something that the official candidate will not be able to do. Can anyone imagine Adán Augusto López criticizing his friend the president or showing that there was no such transformation? ?
No, the truth is that although the López, Ebrard and Monreal come from the PRI trunk that in the councils recommended that once the candidate is elected he should break with the president in turn, it is difficult to imagine that López Obrador accepts that his candidate criticizes him.
The following can be deduced from recent history: after the events of October 2, Echeverría distanced himself from Díaz Ordaz; López Portillo did not have an opponent, de la Madrid did too but discreetly, he promised the moral renewal of society, a way to set himself apart; Salinas de Gortari did not distance himself; Zedillo benefited from the murder of Colosio and after winning he put Raúl Salinas de Gortari in jail; Fox supported Calderón, but he left Josefina alone, who lost to Peña Nieto, who paved the way for López Obrador, with the impunity pact that is so much talked about.
But that is history, as the president decided to open hostilities with a view to succession in the spectrum, names of various origins are already sounding, which allow us to anticipate that it will be a competition like the previous one with four, five or more candidates on the ballot.
When reviewing the electorate, it is possible to observe that López Obrador has a strong vote that remains faithful, as evidenced by the polls that approve of him but disapprove of his government on core issues. On the other side, there is an opposition that was already present in last year’s elections. If someone manages to articulate citizen discontent for his cause, they could beat the candidate of the president and Morena.
This articulation will go through the proposals, in addition to those already mentioned, a serious fight against insecurity and organized and disorganized crime, recover the confidence of national and foreign investors and thereby rebuild the national economy, promote employment and restore hope to the middle classes, call for national unity, all this and more, for example, do justice to the victims of Covid-19, the dead in Tlalhuelipan; Metro Line 12; in Tula, Hidalgo; in the Pemex hospital, in Villahermosa and punish corruption in works of the current administration. Only in those cases would there be enough fabric to cut from.
