TikTok releases its first album with its most viral hits

The social network TikTok has compiled a part of its viral musical successes, adapted with an orchestra, in an album that will be released on CD and disc this summer, the platform announced on Friday.

It will be the first time that TikTok, associated with the Warner Classics record label, will enter the traditional music market.

Six singles from the album will be released on streaming platforms on July 8.

The 18 songs on the album, called “TikTok Classics: Meme and Viral Hits” will be available in August via streaming and in stores.

Anyone who has browsed a bit on the famous short video social network will recognize songs like “No Roots” by Alice Merton, or the piano song “Pieces” by Danilo Stankovic, viewed by more than 3.4 million users.

“Hearing ‘No Roots’ in a new musical context is inspiring,” said Alice Merton in a statement. “I am excited about this project and can’t wait to see how it will come to life.”

All songs were reworked by the German Babelsberg Film Orchestra.

Among the titles is “Monkeys Spinning Monkeys”, with a festive rhythm and full of flute sounds, which has more than 27.1 million views.

Also “Wellerman Sea Shanty”, which invaded TikTok in early 2021, after a Scottish postman, Nathan Evans, recorded himself singing this 19th century folk song.

The song quickly went viral, and Queen’s Brian May and celebrated songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber are among those who proposed adapting it.
