Tightness tests the ally of the PH that many times are not done so explosions are generated

Gas leaks in Horizontal Properties (PH) or buildings with more than 5 floors in the country have caused at least 10 fires in the last six years in which fatalities have been recorded, for example, on August 30 A 90-year-old woman died after an explosion in a building, in Vía Argentina, in which it was found that there was a gas leak.

According to Major Ángel Delgado, Director of Related Calamities of the Meritorious Fire Department of the Republic of Panama, these types of fires are preventable since gas leaks usually occur when tightness tests are not carried out regularly or on time.

“The administration of the PH must carry out the hermeticity test every 3 years since the building was built in the buildings that have communal gas, in the buildings that have more than 5 floors, those that have up to 5 floors can use gas of 25 pounds as long as you have the endorsement of the Fire Department,” he said, explaining that these tests must be carried out by companies that are duly authorized by the fire department.

The figures of the Meritorious Fire Department show that this year they received 454 calls for gas leaks, for which Delgado called on the resident and administrative owners of the tolls in the country to ensure compliance with safety regulations and these much-needed tests are done on time.

“We can point out that there are a large number of gas leaks that do not reach explosions because people call on time,” he said, noting that other cases are leaks that are caused by the same people because they leave the supply key or the open stove and this also causes explosions.

He stressed that, in general, airtightness tests are not that expensive, for example, in the Meritorious Fire Department, the fixed amount to be paid is $50, and he specified that when airtightness tests are not carried out, the authorities are empowered to sanction the administrators. of horizontal properties with fines ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 depending on the size of the building.
