Tierra del Fuego quintupled coronavirus cases for the second consecutive week

The province of Tierra del Fuego once again increased the number of coronavirus cases fivefold for the second consecutive week.

The province of Tierra del Fuego once again increased the number of coronavirus cases for the second consecutive week, and accumulated the highest number in that same period of all of 2021, official sources from the Fuegian Ministry of Health confirmed this Tuesday.

The jurisdiction had interrupted in mid-December a period of 35 days without autochthonous cases of the disease, with the appearance of a contagion corresponding to a worker in the tourism sector.

From there, the new diagnoses began to grow exponentially: the week of December 21, 14 cases were registered, in the following week there were 69 and in the last 336, of which 232 correspond to the city of Ushuaia, 95 to Río Grande and 9 to Tolhuin.

The summer season, and in particular the start of the cruise ship call in the port of Ushuaia, led to the appearance of infections associated with tourist activity.

It all started with 11 cases detected at the end of November, of which 9 belonged to the crew of the cruise ship “Ultramarine”, of the Quark Expeditions company, which arrived in Ushuaia on the 25th of that month.

In the following weeks, 7 imported cases were diagnosed (on December 7), 3 more (on December 14) and another 8 (on December 21), although already combining with autochthonous cases.

Tierra del Fuego currently has 353 people suffering from the disease, 287 more than in the previous week.

Officials confirmed that currently there are 32,211 infected since the start of the pandemic: 31,395 were discharged (98.44%) and there are 494 deaths.

After 17 weeks of continuous improvements in the epidemiological situation, the province began to have new signs of the virus from the reopening of foreign tourism, especially through cruise travel.
