The president assures that the shipment of oil to Cuba will be resolved through diplomatic channels, meanwhile, other fundamental products will be sent.
LIMA, Peru – The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reaffirmed her support for the Cuban regime this Sunday during a visit to the state of Sonora.
According to a statement from the Mexican Government, published by its Ministry of Foreign Affairsthe president expressed her willingness to continue seeking “through diplomatic channels” the shipment of oil to Cuba “for humanitarian reasons, without seeking confrontations.”
The official note assures that Sheinbaum will send humanitarian aid to the Island this week composed of other basic products, without detailing whether it is food, medicine, or what type of fundamental items.
According to the president, “Mexico’s relationship with all countries in the world is one of respect and solidarity. The call with President Donald Trump was respectful, and progress is being made in various agreements on the main issues of the relationship, including trade and security,” the statement states.
The state company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) canceled the shipment of a crude oil cargo destined for Cuba, a decision that indicates that pressure from the United States is already influencing concrete actions with a direct impact on the critical energy situation of the Island.
According to information published by BloombergPemex withdrew from its programming a shipment scheduled for mid-January, whose arrival at Cuban ports was calculated before the end of the month. The oil would be transported by the ship Swift Galaxy, but it was removed from the itinerary without the oil company or the Mexican Energy Secretariat offering official explanations.
The cancellation occurs at a particularly sensitive time for Cuba. Since 2023, Mexico had assumed a key role as a supplier after the collapse of crude oil shipments from Venezuela, becoming a fundamental support amid prolonged blackouts, fuel shortages and a deep economic crisis. In the last year alone, Mexican shipments were around 20,000 barrels per day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The stop to shipments coincides with a hardening of Washington’s tone towards Havana. US President Donald Trump, declared last Thursday “national emergency” with respect to Cuba, considering that “the policies, practices and actions” of Havana constitute “an unusual and extraordinary threat” to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
In the executive orderdated January 29, Trump maintains that Havana “aligns” and “supports” hostile countries and actors, in addition to pointing out organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah, among others.
A published information by the White House details that Cuba hosts Russia’s largest overseas signals intelligence facility focused on stealing sensitive national security information from the United States and provides safe haven for transnational terrorist groups
In response to the emergency, the order establishes a “tariff system” that would allow the imposition of an additional tax on imports from countries that “sell” or “provide” oil to Cuba, directly or indirectly.
