Three Zulian doctors accused of having caused the death of a patient due to malpractice arrested

In the midst of this situation, the board of directors of the Medical College of Zulia state has requested the competent authorities to have several scenarios before pointing out to its members that they are responsible for an alleged case of malpractice.

Three doctors have been arrested in the state of Zulia after being pointed out by the prosecutor Tarek Willam Saabof having caused the death of a patient, holding them responsible for “malpractice”.

The prosecutor appointed by the extinct constituent assembly, once again resorted to his Twitter account to announce the actions of the Public Ministry, in which he announced that an arrest warrant had been issued against Luis Gómez, Gerardo Núñez and Evert Colina, all recognized doctors of the University Hospital of Maracaibo.

According to Tarek, the medical personnel would have left a pair of scissors inside the body of the patient Iván Chávez after the intervention.

Since Friday, April 1, the three doctors have been detained at the headquarters of the Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations Corps (Cicpc) in the city of Maracaibo; This was confirmed by the director of the HUM, Alfonsina Romero.

Yesterday (April 1) the fourth homicide prosecutor was at the hospital requesting the patient’s medical history and the list of all those who participated in that shift. Yesterday they were all summoned to the Cicpc to testify and they left the three boys; then they came out that they were requesting an arrest warrant.” This was stated by Dr. Romero in a telephone interview with the whistle.

College of Physicians asks to investigate the case

In the midst of this situation, the board of directors of the Medical College of Zulia state has requested the competent authorities to have several scenarios before pointing out to its members that they are responsible for an alleged case of malpractice, and justifying this fact as the cause. of death of the patient, something they considered “delicate”.

“Before issuing a judgment or sanctioning a priori, on this delicate and unfortunate case, it is necessary to be certain of the cause of death, based on the content of the history, the memory of the act or surgical acts performed and the studies of laboratory and pathological anatomy that certify the cause of death “, they detailed.

They consider it essential to take into account all the points, since, in their opinion, the patient’s history and the reason for his first intervention speak of an infectious inflammatory process due to intestinal diverticulitis, which in itself can lead to generalized sepsis.

From the College of Physicians of the entity they consider that health specialists have been directly blamed without there even being a serious investigation that enjoys scientific certainty.

They question that up to now, how the case has been handled has given rise to the detained doctors being victims of defamation and persecution, not taking into consideration that cases where similar incidents have occurred and have been resolved without major incidents in second interventions, which It shows “that there is no lethal cause-and-effect relationship.”

They took the opportunity to extend their condolences to the patient’s relatives and that justice be done so that “the truth and the true cause of this unfortunate death come to light.”

On March 20, doctors Luis Gómez, Gerardo Núñez and Evert Colina operated on Iván Chávez, 59-year-old patients at the University Hospital of Maracaibo, who presented inflammatory diverticulitis at the time of admission.

Four days after the intervention, the doctors realized that some scissors had remained in the patient’s abdomen, so they proceeded to carry out a second intervention. After this practice the patient dies.
