San Juan (EFE).- The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Bureau reported this friday of which a under 3 years of age died after a boat carrying 35 migrants trying to reach the west coast of Puerto Riconear the municipality of Rincón.
“This incident was in the early morning. The boat arrived at the area of Los Almendros, which is in Rincón, but almost Añasco. The boat turned and we recovered the body of a minor from the water. He was taken to a hospital and at the hospital they declared him dead, ”said CBP spokesman Jeffrey Quiñones, according to local media.
The migrants aboard the boat that capsized are 33 of Haitian origin, including 25 men and eight women, a Dominican and an Iraqi.
Units of the United Rapid Action Force (FURA) are investigating the event, along with federal Customs personnel (BBP).
This event occurred more than a week after Coast Guard agents rescue 34 Haitian migrants that were abandoned by smugglers on a cliff on the island of Monito, west of Puerto Rico.
Monito is located in the Isla de la Mona area, located in the homonymous channel, which separates Puerto Rico from Dominican Republic and it is a frequent migratory route where this year there have been 2 shipwrecks, in which 16 Haitians died.
On May 12, north of the Puerto Rican islet of Desecheo, a boat capsized that caused the death of eleven Haitian women. EFE
