Three proposals from business leaders to achieve sustainable development

Three proposals from business leaders to achieve sustainable development

“Moving from commitments to action” is one of the most valid and urgent phrases, with a view to building a viable and sustainable. This is the basis of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, and the reason why, makes a call to start adopting them through multisectoral alliances.

The role of the private sector must be proactive: assume the commitment to mobilize resources and actions; as well as implement innovation to make progress possible that benefits all people.

describes the need to agree among the various sectors of society to include, integrate and reach specific goals in which we are still distant at the country level. Objective 17.17 speaks of “fostering and promoting the formation of effective alliances in the public, public-private and civil society spheres, taking advantage of the experience and strategies for obtaining resources from alliances”.

For this reason, L+1 considers it essential not only to seek agreement and common struggle, but also to share the experiences and contributions of its leaders, in order to inspire the rest of the business community. Here are three leaders and three essential topics:

Susana Eléspuru: Leadership from senior management and governance

The lessons learned from the pandemic have highlighted the new business challenges. With a view to their long-term sustainability, the role of companies must expand to include in their ecosystem of relevant stakeholders their suppliers, customers and adjacent communities (something that is very important) and of course, their collaborators.

How to approach this transformation quickly and successfully? Big changes always come from above and here the leadership of Senior Management and Governance through their boards is vital, in order to ensure focus and priority in their strategies and management. Likewise, we need to change the “mindset” for one of greater collaboration between companies, institutions and civil society, in order to generate alliances at all levels. In this way we will achieve synergies that will enhance the required impact.

Darío Zegarra: Alliances with the public sector and civil society

A well-known adage says: “if you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together”. Peru is a wonderful country, but with immense challenges. In addition to the marked differences between urban and rural, between coast, mountains and jungle in their access to infrastructure and basic services; we add a very low interpersonal trust and trust in institutions (Latinobarometro 2021). Our persistent mistrust prevents collaboration and cooperation, which are vital competencies when it comes to building inclusive and caring societies.

Building alliances in Peru, and especially public-private ones, is a decision of deep conviction that leads us to forge links, synergies and collective leadership and that gives us the opportunity to face with solvency the challenges that we have as a society. In Peru we have abundant natural resources, biodiversity, water and minerals, but the collective capacity to convert them into human development and sustainability to go far is still a pending task for all of us.

Eduardo Herrera: Energy transformation of Peru

The consolidation of alliances to promote the energy transformation that the country needs is inevitable. Although great technological advances have been made in recent years, it is necessary to continue working on the maturation of the market hand in hand with suppliers. Comprehensive energy solutions based on renewable energies and the electrification of services are needed. We also need to further involve universities in the implementation of technological laboratories and in the development of human capital that will support this transformation. On the other hand, we need to accelerate innovative local ventures with platforms or more contests such as Energízate, which we promote from Celepsa.

Similarly, spaces for co-creation between public and private actors should be promoted to execute a concerted roadmap supported by an effective regulatory framework that accelerates said transformation and allows providing the necessary incentives for the penetration of these technologies and for promote the decarbonization of the country.
