In upstate New York, a winter storm was reported yesterday Saturday that left almost 2 meters of snow and caused three deaths.
The Buffalo metropolitan area was particularly affected. Some southern parts of the city received more than five feet of snow. About 80 miles (129 kilometers) to the east, the town of Natural Bridge near Fort Drum Army base reported just under 2 meters.
The US Weather Service forecast partly clear skies but more snow on Sunday, and showers on Monday.
Two people died from heart failure associated with physical exertion shoveling snow from their driveways. A third died Friday when her vehicle rolled over.
Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for parts of western New York state, including communities on the eastern edge of Lakes Erie and Lake Ontario. The measure covers 11 counties and traffic was prohibited on a stretch of Interstate 90.
Those types of storms are common in Buffalo. In November 2014, one of them dumped 2 meters of snow in three days, causing roofs to collapse and trapping drivers on the road.
