Three dead and several injured, including a girl in critical condition, is the balance so far of the car accident happened this Tuesday morning in the Mayabeque province.
A tanker truck and a passenger truck collided at kilometer 73 of the Vía Blanca, near the Bacunayagua bridge, according to a report by TV Yumurí.
The incident occurred when a private transportation truck collided with a tanker loaded with asphalt belonging to the Architecture and Engineering Works Construction Company number 5 and coming from Havana.
TV Yumurí specifies that one of the passengers died at the scene of the incident, while two other people died at the Comandante Faustino Pérez Hernández hospital in Matanzas.
The rest of the patients, adults, are cared for in the medical institution. Meanwhile, three children are being treated at the Eliseo Noel Caamaño pediatric hospital in Matanzas.
The journalist José Miguel Solís reported on Facebook that a family and their neighbors were traveling in the truck, coming from Alquízar, who were going on an excursion in Varadero.
Now the experts continue with the investigation to determine the causes of the event.
This Monday there was another traffic accident in the municipality of Urbano Noris, Holguín, in which two people were killed by the Havana-Guantánamo train. According to the local radio station RadioSG La Voz del Azúcar, it was not possible to stop the locomotive’s march in time to prevent the event, which took place in the morning hours of June 12.
Also in early June, four people died and more than 30 were injured as a result of an accident at kilometer 10 of the Havana-Melena highway. A car from the National Bus Company that was traveling from the Port of Batabanó to the Cuban capital ended up overturned.
The numbers
Train accidents are not common in Cuba, but traffic accidents represent the fifth cause of death and the first not related to health problems.
The National Road Safety Commission reported last May that between January and April 2023, more than 3,000 traffic accidents have occurred in Cuba, with a balance of 243 deaths and more than 2,300 injuries.
Holguín is one of the provinces that reported an increase in deaths in this period, along with Cienfuegos and Havana.
The National Road Safety Commission points out that in April indicators such as collisions 688 (-98), deaths 51 (-5) and injuries 535 (-60) decreased and that Cienfuegos, Artemisa and Holguín were the only territories that increased the number of events .
