Three Cuban migrants die in a traffic accident in Mexico

Three migrants of Cuban origin died and 15 more, both from the island and from Nicaragua, were injured in a car accident on the Tinaja-Cosoleacaque highway, in the Mexican state of Veracruz. This road is an obligatory passage for thousands of people seeking to reach the northern border and later to the United States.

“The excessive speed with which the truck was driven caused one of the tires to explode and caused the unit to overturn,” he tells 14ymedio a paramedic from an ambulance attached to Federal Revenue and Related Services Roads and Bridges. “In the group, assistance was provided to two children named Chistofer Leo Martín and Christer Fabián Martín”, aged 9 and 6, respectively.

The vehicle, with license plates UBP-1854 from the state of Puebla, was transporting 18 migrants, three of them the deceased, a woman, a man and a minor. While 15 injured were taken to the hospital of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Cosamaloapan.

Apart from the minors mentioned, the injured were Aranely Orduña Ramírez, 21, Alfredo Martín Ariad (33), Alfredo Martín Aguiar (33), Arisnae Orduña Aguilera (32), Lisandra Martínez Montiaguelo (23), Magdiel Fernández Águila (21 ), Osvaldo Pérez Ramos (55), Aile Díaz Díaz (25), Antoni Savina López (17), Lien López Suárez (50), Jaime Antonio Espinoza (32) and Magdiel Hernández (21).

The driver fled, and police and ministerial agents set up a fence at the accident site and began investigations to find his whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the driver fled, and police and ministerial agents set up a fence at the accident site and began investigations to find his whereabouts. “The police gave notice to the authorities of the municipality of Carlos A. Carrillo to try to locate him and arrest him in a possible case of migrant smuggling,” said a source.

The deceased migrants were transferred to the Cosamaloapan Forensic Medical Service. “Migration has already learned and it will be until one of the injured can identify them, that they will proceed to bury or incinerate them.”

The institution indicated that up to the month of February, 5,020 irregular migrants had been intercepted, many of them in Veracruz. This Monday, the state police held 38 migrants from Cuba, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras and Venezuela at checkpoints in the municipalities of Agua Dulce and Córdoba.

Some were transferred to the migration center of Acayucan, Veracruz. This place was blocked at the beginning of March by a group of Cubans who demanded the release of 22 of his compatriots who are held, some since last January.

“Nelson, Ariadna and Henry had to be released since last Friday and the immigration authorities refuse to do so despite the fact that we have won an injunction and a fine has already been paid,” he tells 14ymedio the lawyer Alfonso Rios.
