The Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (EGEHID) signed an agreement with the National Office to Support Penitentiary Reform (ONAPREP) that will allow the incorporation of those deprived of liberty under the modality of Half Freeto the reforestation work of the country’s hydrographic basins.
The agreement, signed by the engineer Rafael Salazarrepresenting the EGEHID, and Roberto Santanaby ONAPREP, will be carried out gradually, with the first phase being the intervention of the basins of the San Juan (Sabaneta dam) and Nizao (between San Cristóbal, Peravia and Ocoa) rivers.
Professor Roberto Santana explained the scope of the agreement, in an event chaired by the president of the Board of Directors of EGEHID, doctor Rosa Ysabel Ruíz.

It is specified that other hydrographic basins will be incorporated according to the inter-institutional Strategic Plan and the Annual Operational Plan approved by the parties, so that the penitentiary and correctional system is assigned, as one of its permanent missions, the management and environmental remediation of all basins. hydrographic of the country.
The plan to reestablish forest cover has the objective of reversing the levels of soil degradation, and thus increasing the water retention capacity of the areas of influence of the dams, which guarantee the supply of water through the aqueducts. , agricultural and livestock irrigation, clean energy production, as well as ecotourism and fishing activities.
For planting, among other species, criollo pine, cabirma, cigua prieta, white cigua, Guama, poppy, jobo, royal palm, mara, red cedar, white cedar, Creole mahogany and African mahogany will be used.
The agreement also contemplates the cleaning of banks and water courses, in order to eliminate solid waste and other forms of contamination of flora and fauna.
According to the Law 113-21the Medium Free modality allows the person convicted of criminal offenses to reintegrate into work through paid work, applying alternative measures to imprisonment.
