So far this year, a total of 10 Mexican migrants have lost their lives in the United States, in incidents in which they were “in the custody” of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), and the most recent of them occurred yesterday at dawn, indicated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

In a press conference, the Undersecretary for North America, Roberto Velasco, reported that from January 20 – the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration – to date, a dozen Mexicans have died in the context of immigration operations.

According to the official, the most recent of these cases took place yesterday morning in San Bernardino, California, and the Foreign Ministry has already contacted the victim’s daughter. In these cases, he said, there is a protocol to provide legal support to the families of the victims and express to them both the condolences of the Mexican authorities and their “strong support.”

When asked for more details about the cause of death of the 10 Mexicans, Velasco indicated that “each case is different,” because while some involved illnesses that became complicated, in others – such as the one that occurred in Dallas, Texas – the deceased Mexican was shot by a shooter who was later killed, in turn, by ICE.

In Chicago, on the other hand, it was elements of said organization who opened fire on the migrant, and it is presumed that in other cases the detained Mexicans could have taken their own lives.

Velasco emphasized that we must be “careful with words” and not affirm that the Mexicans “died at the hands of ICE”, but rather “in their custody”, although this in any case implies a responsibility of the US immigration agents in what happened, which is why Mexico demands an exhaustive investigation into all cases.

More than 116 thousand repatriates

For his part, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente explained that the Mexican government has sent 13 diplomatic notes to the United States, especially through the embassy in Washington, to express its disagreement with the treatment of migrants, and has requested clarification of the facts, as part of the “intense work” of the organization in charge.

Likewise, he added that from January 20 to October 23 of this year, a total of 116,320 Mexicans have been repatriated from the United States, of which 93,153 have received consular assistance. Velasco added that in that same period, 169 ICE operations have been carried out, in which 2,382 Mexicans have been detained.

De la Fuente indicated, on the other hand, that the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo promotes a new model of care for Mexican migrants in the United States, based mainly on promoting the obtaining of appointments digitally to carry out various procedures.
