After the inauguration ceremony of President López Obrador took place in the Union Congress, which was led by the then president of the Lower House, Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, and the president of the Senate, Martí Batres, and where the former president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, was also present, who presented the Presidential Sash to Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, who in turn placed it on López Obrador, AMLO gave a message to the Nation that lasted approximately just over an hour.
After finishing his speech, the president held a private meeting with invited heads of state at the National Palace.
After the meeting, López Obrador led a celebration in the capital’s Zócalo, for his inauguration as president of Mexico. There, on December 1, he assured that he would not only fulfill the constitutional obligation of submitting a report to the Legislature, but that he would also go to the capital’s main square to speak to the people.
In his first speech, López Obrador also outlined the 100 points of his national project, which included the repeal of the educational reform, the improvement of the health system to a first-world level, and scholarships and financial support for unemployed youth, people with disabilities and senior citizens, as well as promoting austerity. After the president’s speech, for the first time a ceremony was held to hand over the Baton of Command by representatives of the indigenous peoples of Mexico, in the Plaza de la Constitución.
