The extracted elements are located in a laboratory located at the Caribbean Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research Center.
The research on the San José Galleon advances to a new stage. Recently, the Colombian State confirmed the recovery of five archaeological objects in the study area where the historic sunken vessel is located, marking the formal beginning of the second phase of the scientific and cultural research project.
A project with a scientific approach
These works are part of the project “Towards the heart of the San José galleon”a strictly scientific initiative promoted by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledgethe National Navythe General Maritime Directorate (DIMAR) and the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH).
According to ICANH, all the recovered items were transferred to a specialized laboratory located in the DIMAR Caribbean Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research Centerin Cartagena. This space is constituted as the basis for the analysis and conservation of the materials that, it is expected, will provide key information about the historical and material context of the shipwreck.

Advances in research
For ICANH, the extraction of these artifacts represents a significant advance, as it will allow the evaluation of the state of conservation of the materials present at the shipwreck site. These first objects are essential to understand the current conditions of the underwater archaeological site and to guide the following stages of conservation and comprehensive study.
Preliminarily, it was indicated that the laboratory analysis will focus on determining the most appropriate mechanisms to ensure the long term preservation of the artifacts.
