Ángel, who had heard of the existence of bitcoin and ethereum, did not know in detail what they consisted of, however he decided to participate. “When I made my registration it was the last day, I was hesitant to participate because I had no idea. I didn’t know the market and I didn’t know if I was going to get the forecast right,” he says in an interview with Expansion.
The young student checked the bitcoin price for that day on the internet and made up a calculation before betting on the future price. He knew that he could grow but estimated that it would not be much.
“I opened the account (in January); at that time I was helping my dad with some jobs and he was paying me. I said: whatever he pays me, 100 or 200 pesos, I’ll leave it for a while and then 300 will be made. I knew that I wasn’t going to become a millionaire overnight,” he says.
Days later he was contacted by the Bitso team to inform him that he had won more than 800,000 pesos. “A person from the Bitso team contacted me and told me that I had won a bitcoin. At first I didn’t believe it, I thought they wanted to extort me, I didn’t even remember that I had entered the contest.”
Ángel had to enter his app to realize that it was not a scam and that he had indeed been the winner.
The award brought Ángel closer to the world of investments. The financial system was not foreign to him because he already had a debit card in which he was deposited for doing work such as small remodeling, help in surveys and drawing plans.
Now he intends to investigate more about other investment vehicles that allow him to diversify his portfolio, although he first plans to use part of his prize to start his career as an architect.
“I think that with that money I could be benefiting in my career, maybe I can use it to start building something small and invest more money in bitcoin. I would like to know a little more about where to invest, transfer the money to another currency and I’ve tried to see where I can learn a little bit more. Putting my eggs in different baskets is the mindset I’m falling into.”
Winning this award not only changed Ángel’s mentality, but also that of his family. When he told his parents that he had won a contest, they did not believe him. They told him they wouldn’t do it until they see the money in a bank account or in cash.
Ángel had to explain a little about the history of bitcoin: an asset whose price was less than one dollar and has exceeded one million pesos.
