This is the new $20,000 coin that the Bank of the Republic launched this Friday

The Bank of the Republic put into circulation this Friday, November 15, the Guarniel-Carriel Antioqueño commemorative coin, which was minted for commemorative purposes to recognize the artisanal craft associated with the manufacture of this flagship accessory of the country and to exalt Jericó and Envigado (Antioquia), like the municipalities that preserve this tradition.

On its obverse, this new commemorative coin presents the image of a typical ‘Carriel Antioqueño’ with all its characteristics, which was exalted in the Congress of the Republic through Law 2139 of 2021.

On the reverse, the coin shows a muleteer from behind, with a hat, leather apron and his inevitable cart. The muleteer looks towards the mountains, the scene of the Antioquian colonization during which Jericó was founded in 1850. It was there where the manufacture of carts began in the 19th century, which soon spread to other municipalities such as Envigado.

The design also includes a latent image as a security element that, depending on the angle from which it is viewed, reflects the initials ‘BR’ or the Arabic numeral ’20’, the legend ‘REPÚBLICA DE COLOMBIA’, the denomination of ‘$20,000 PESOS ‘ and the year ‘2024’.

The Guarniel – Carriel Antioqueño commemorative coin is silver-toned, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. It has an approximate dimension of 35 millimeters (mm) in diameter and a face value of $20,000.

How to acquire the currency?

You can purchase it at the Treasury Counters of the Banco de la República in Bogotá, at the Bank’s branches and cultural agencies nationwide, as well as at the Luis Ángel Arango Library and at the Casa Gómez Campuzano, in Bogotá. A maximum of three coins can be purchased per user, upon request of an appointment and while supplies last.
