With an extension of 62,951 km², the smallest municipality in Colombia is located in its territory.
News Colombia.
Colombia is made up of 32 departments and a capital district, which is Bogotá, the capital of the nation. Each of them is a carrier of a unique cultural identity, with traditions, accents and gastronomies that, together, form a diversity mosaic that captivates national and international visitors.
Beyond its political limits, this territorial structure reflects the history, geography and very essence of its communities.
In the administrative organization, the departments are divided into municipalities, corregimientos and police inspections. Among all, Antioquia stands out for being the department with the highest number of municipalities: 125.
This region offers surprising geographical diversity: from coastal villages bathed by the Caribbean Sea to localities located more than two thousand meters above sea level.
With 62,951 km², Antioquia is the sixth largest department in the country and the second most important economy in Colombia.

Contrasts within the same territory
In Antioquia, the smallest municipality is Sabaneta, located in the south of the Aburrá Valley, while the largest is located in the Urabá area, reflecting the marked extent differences and characteristics of each place.
For their management, the 125 municipalities are organized in 9 subregions: Aburrá Valley, East, West, Southwest, Northeast, Magdalena Medio, Bajo Cauca, Norte and Urabá.
After Antioquia, Boyacá occupies the second place with 123 municipalities, followed by Cundinamarca with 116.
At the other extreme, Vichada is the department with fewer municipalities – only 4 – although its territorial extension makes it one of the largest in the country.
