A natural bioluminescence phenomenon makes this place of the Colombian Caribbean a tourist attraction like the beach where the sea shines the most in the night in Colombia.
Caribbean news
In Colombia there is a place where the sea shines during the night. It is a phenomenon known as bioluminescence, caused by the presence of microorganisms called Dinoflagellados, which emit light when water is stirred. This natural show is visible mainly in areas of warm and quiet waters, and in Colombia it can be observed at a specific point of the Caribbean.
The beach where this phenomenon is manifested with greater intensity is the enchanted lagoon, located in the Rosary Islands, near Cartagena. There, during the moonless nights, the water acquires an electric blue glow that reacts to the movement, creating a flashy and unusual visual effect in the country.
How to get there
Access to this destination is done from the city of Cartagena, taking a quick boat from the cellar spring. The journey to the Rosary Islands lasts approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Several tour operators offer night tours that include transport, the guided tour of the lagoon and recommendations to enjoy the phenomenon without affecting the natural environment.
Prices per person vary between $ 120,000 and $ 180,000 Colombian pesos, depending on the hired plan and the season.
Responsible tourism
The enchanted lagoon is part of the Natural Park Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo, so that conservation and responsible tourism standards must be followed. It is recommended not to use repellent or sunscreen before entering water, avoiding the use of powerful flashlights and not generating waste in the area. Local communities participate in the operation of these tours and promote respect for the marine ecosystem.
The phenomenon of bioluminescence can be observed throughout the year, but occurs with greater intensity between the months of January and April, when there is less rains and greater visibility during the night.
