The National Government announced that the reduction in the price of gasoline would be 300 pesos and that the measure would come into force as of February 1, as confirmed by the Minister of Finance and Public Credit, Germán Ávila Plazasin dialogue with Caracol Radio. The announcement has generated expectations among drivers and the country’s productive sectors and questions about the value to be reduced.

According to the head of the economic portfolio, this decrease is possible thanks to the stabilization of the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund (FEPC)after the Government managed to cover the deficit accumulated in previous years. This adjustment would allow us to begin a stage of gradual relief in the cost of fuel.

Ávila Plazas explained that another determining factor has been the recent behavior of the exchange rate, since the appreciation of the Colombian peso against the dollar reduces the costs associated with fuel imports. In that sense, he pointed out that the price of gasoline will begin to “flow” in accordance with the exchange rate dynamics.

The minister clarified that the reduction does not respond to an isolated decision, but rather to a technical analysis that seeks to maintain the balance between relief to citizens’ pockets and the sustainability of public finances. For this reason, he warned that future adjustments will depend on the conditions of the international market and the behavior of the dollar.

In this scenario, after the internal price of gasoline almost doubled between 2020 and 2025—going from around $9,000 to more than $16,500 per gallon (in Cali, for example)—the combination of the recent drop in international oil prices, the strength of the peso against the dollar and the adjustments applied in the local market opens the possibility that the value of the gallon will decrease and once again approach ranges close to the $13,000.

Among the cities with the highest gasoline values is Villavicencio, where the gallon is located at $16,591, followed by Cali ($16,502), Bogotá ($16,491) and Manizales ($16,466). In the coffee region, Pereira registers $16,439, while Medellín reaches $16,412 per gallon.

With the reduction that the Government promises starting February 1, a gallon of gasoline in Cali will cost less 16,502 pesos to 16,302 pesos.
