Why was the contingency activated in the Valley of Mexico?
The environmental contingency was activated after ozone levels exceeded the limits established to protect health. At 4:00 p.m., authorities recorded a maximum concentration of 160 parts per billion (ppb) of ozone at the Cuajimalpa station (CUA), located in the Cuajimalpa mayor’s office, in Mexico City.
This level exceeded the threshold that requires activating Phase 1 of environmental contingency, in accordance with the current programs for the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico.
The weather conditions directly influenced this episode. A high pressure system remained over the center of the country, causing little wind and poor ventilation, preventing pollutants from dispersing. In addition, a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius was recorded, a high value for this time of year, which favors the formation and accumulation of ozone.
Faced with this scenario, the Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis activated the contingency with the objective of reducing the population’s exposure to contaminated air, reducing health risks and applying measures to reduce the emission of pollutants in the region.
Recommendations for the population
Stay informed about air quality and follow health instructions to avoid exposing yourself to pollution peaks between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Prevent girls and boys, older adults, pregnant women and people with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases from remaining outdoors during these hours.
Do not carry out civic, cultural, recreational activities or exercise outdoors between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Suspends or postpones sporting, cultural events or mass shows scheduled during that period.
Avoid smoking, especially in closed spaces.
Actions to reduce emissions
Facilitate remote work and make purchases or procedures online to reduce transfers.
Avoid the use of aerosols, flavorings, paints, waterproofing products and products with solvents.
Fill with gasoline after 6:00 p.m. or before 10:00 a.m. and do not continue filling the tank after the gun safety is released.
Check and repair gas leaks at home.
Reduce fuel consumption: shorten shower and cooking time by using containers with lids.
