The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, pointed out, this Friday, November 11, that if The United States will change its anti-drug policy and put an end to the criminalization of consumption, that could bring peace to the country “in a matter of months“.
(See: 100 days in power: Invamer survey ‘raja’ Petro and CNC saves him).
“Remake an anti-drug policy based on the prevention of public health and not criminalization, which could almost lead Colombia to peace in a matter of months. That depends on the United StatesPetro assured in Paris.
In statements to the media at the end of the Paris Forum for Peace, asked the US President Joe Biden to become “peace activist“.
He explained that in the pacification process in Colombia, the United States “it has a determining role because, depending on its drug policy, it brings violence or peace to South America“.
The reason Petro gave is that, according to his analysis, the repressive policy launched by President Richard Nixon 50 years ago has had as a consequence in this time “a million dead Latin Americans“.

On the other hand, the Colombian president welcomed the fact that the proposal he launched on the occasion of the COP27, to reduce the debt of developing countries in exchange for investments in climate action, and that would have as its central axis the International Monetary Fund (IMF), “has been welcomed as the agenda of the South“.
“I believe that agenda of the South must be strengthened“, he claimed.
He considered that the passage through Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt), where this climatic summit takes place, has left Colombia “as one of the vanguards of today“.
(See: Petro’s harsh criticism of rich countries).
He pointed out, however, that he had “a distaste” left to the extent that since the 2015 COP that gave rise to the Paris Agreements on climate change, “all promises have been broken” what concerns to the adaptation.
And if there is no international financing, in his opinion that is equivalent to “every man for himself” and in the end what it implies is “death or mass exodus” for “vulnerable peoples”.
(See: Mood to invest and uncertainty: business view on Petro).
“To the extent that the extreme right is taking governments in the rich world or are part of governments, there is a kind of policy of discarding poor peoples that in the climate crisis means death“, he claimed.
