During the days of rest, mobility along the country’s main road corridors increased. According to the official balance, 6,241,675 vehicles traveled through the different tolls in the national territory, which means an increase of 4% compared to the 6,008,523 vehicles reported in 2024. Despite this greater flow, the accident rate decreased drastically, marking a contrast with previous years in which the increase in traffic usually coincided with higher numbers of accidents.

In the same period, land transportation terminals recorded fluid operations. 240,000 dispatches were made and 2,422,055 passengers were transported, who moved safely thanks to the coordinated work between traffic authorities, transport companies and control agencies.

Controls, sanctions and road prevention

The Traffic Police deployed a national control device that included breathalyzer tests, document review, technical verification of vehicles and speed monitoring. According to the official report, sand they carried out 6,420 drunkenness tests, of which 46 were positive. Although the figure represents a low proportion compared to the volume of controls carried out, the authorities reiterated the call for caution.

“To all irresponsible drivers we remind you: Not a drop of alcohol if you are going to drive! Not only are you risking your life, but that of everyone on the road. Tolerance is zero,” he emphasized.

In terms of sanctions, 8,092 subpoena orders were imposed during the week, which represents a reduction of 36% compared to the same period in 2024. The most common violations were related to excessive speed, expired technical-mechanical inspection and overtaking in prohibited areas.

At the same time, the institution developed 293 road prevention campaigns in different regions of the country. Through these educational actions, awareness was raised among 10,513 road actors, including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. The objective, according to the entity, was to promote co-responsibility and compliance with regulations as tools to reduce accidents.

Unprecedented results in road safety

The general balance of the week left figures without recent precedents. The impact indicators were drastically reduced: 44 people died, which represents a decrease of 84%, and 167 people were injured, equivalent to a reduction of 89% compared to the previous year. These results consolidate the global reduction of 90% in road accidents reported by the Directorate of Traffic and Transportation.

The authorities attribute the result to the combination of permanent controls, pedagogy on the roads and citizen collaboration. According to the report, the police presence on the main roads made it possible to react more quickly to emergencies and prevent risky behavior.
General Blanco highlighted the importance of working together with territorial organizations and road concessions to guarantee safety during the season. He indicated that the institutional effort focused on prevention rather than punishment, although without neglecting strict compliance with the law.
