This is how Kun sees Argentina before facing the World Cup

Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero believes that “it is very difficult for other countries” to play against the Argentine team. This is what the former Albiceleste striker says in an interview granted to FIFA and released this Tuesday with a view to the start of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Kun, who played three World Cups (South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018) with Argentina, recalled that, as a child, he discovered that the Albiceleste “was always among the favorites to win.”

“As the different World Cups passed, you realized that Argentina was always there, among the favorite teams. In my opinion, it is very difficult for other countries to play against Argentina,” Kun explained.

The passion for football reaches schools

Retired from football since December 2021 due to heart problems during his short time at Barça, the former striker commented that the passion for football in Argentina is so great that “even schools suspend their classes” and that, although “being a child you don’t understand much”, he was aware that when a World Cup arrived “the whole country stopped”.

“Depending on the time of the match, schools install screens so that children can watch the World Cup. So, since childhood, the country shows its passion,” said Agüero, who recalled that the first World Cup match he saw was while in class “with 5 or 6 years” (surely in the United States 1994, since he was born in 1988).

Your dream, come true

Regarding his experience as a player in three World Cups, he stressed that “it is the best thing that can happen to a footballer”, since “all children dream of going to a World Cup, but not everyone has the opportunity”.

Agüero spoke about the “responsibility” of soccer players and fans to promote “respect for other cultures”, alluding to the dispute of the next World Cup on Qatari soil, as happened with the 2010 one in South Africa, the first on African soil.

“I think we make progress with each World Cup. Of course, it is impossible to achieve perfection, but little by little people begin to realize what different cultures are like and that we must respect them all,” said Agüero, who in addition to Barça also played for Independiente , Athletic and Manchester City.

The 2022 Qatar World Cup is held from November 20 to December 18 and, in it, the Argentine team, led by Lionel Scaloni, was drawn in group C, in which they will face Saudi Arabia (November 22), Mexico (11/26) and Poland (11/30).
