“This is a democratic party and of humanist principles”: Álvaro Uribe will give guarantees to demobilized members of the FARC.

Former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez announced that the Centro Democrático party can receive demobilized members of the FARC who want to run for political office.

News Colombia.

In a recent space for dialogue in the department of Caquetá, Álvaro Uribe Vélez was asked if his political party would endorse demobilized FARC candidates for the regional elections, and the answer surprised many.

This was what the former president said, “if there is a demobilized member of the FARC who has rebuilt his life and who wants to participate in these activities and wants the endorsement of the Democratic Center, give him that endorsement.”

In turn, Uribe stressed that “this is a democratic party with humanist principles that nobody forgets about that.”

Opinions ‘divided’ in the Democratic Center

Apparently, for the Centro Democrático political party, what Álvaro Uribe exposed was not a surprise.

Within history, other parties have endorsed this type of project.

“What he bets on is real peace and reconciliation, in the democratic center people who participated, for example, in the M19 have already been militants,” it has been said.

“This has been a party that has bet on the integration of Colombians,” said Miguel Uribe Turbay, CD senator.

Senator Ciro Ramírez also expressed his support.

“All the protection and support for the guerrilla base that has complied with the law and the constitution,” said Ramírez.

For political analysts, these recent statements would be a strategy for the regional elections.

However, others have expressed discomfort and some have even been strong critics in the government of Juan Manuel Santos, Iván Duque and now in that of Gustavo Petro, that the demobilized hold public office and are in Congress.
