The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has issued a reminder to political organizations ahead of the 2026 General Elections, pointing out that November 7, 2025 is the deadline for them to officially communicate their definitive candidacies that will participate in the elections. Primary Elections.
This communication must be carried out digitally by the Central Electoral Body (CEO) of each party, using the platform of the Primary Election Registry (REP) of the ONPE, according to the provisions of the primary regulations.
The OEC has the responsibility of not only communicating the candidacies and positions for which they apply within the established period, but is also in charge of verifying that the applicants comply with all the requirements of the law and are not involved in impediments.
As indicated by Onpe, political organizations have the freedom to determine the requirements and the form of presentation of candidatures in accordance with their internal regulations, but they must ensure that applicants have joined the group for which they wish to apply until July 12, 2024 and that they are duly registered in the Registry of Political Organizations (ROP) of the JNE. Onpe was emphatic in warning that parties and alliances that do not comply with declaring their final candidacies by this deadline will be automatically excluded from the primary elections.
The candidacies obligatorily subject to this primary election process include the presidential formula (president and two vice presidents), as well as the lists for senators for single and multiple districts, deputies for multiple districts and representatives before the Andean Parliament.
Regarding the election modality, the majority, a total of 37 political organizations (made up of 34 parties and the National Unity, Venceremos and Fuerza y Libertad alliances), opted for the delegate system for the selection of their candidates. On the other hand, only two groups, the Peruvian Aprista Party and Renovación Popular, have chosen the universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct and secret vote of their members to choose their candidates.
