Mexico City, Mexico-. The family of 49-year-old Samir Muhammed Accar spent almost 300 hours buried under the rubble left behind by the earthquake in Turkey when rescuers found them. The first one they took out was Samir, who, visibly deteriorated and very thin, told the rescuers that his wife Ragda and his son are also alive.
After carefully removing the rubble, the entire family was extricated from the ruins of this Antioquia apartment block. The fatality, however, was not over. The 12-year-old boy died on the way to the hospital.
The bodies of two other children from the same family, who Anadolu Agency says are not Turkish, were recovered from the same ruins.
The nationality of these victims has not been revealed, but the media, based on their names, suggest that they are from Syria. Many of the 3.5 million Syrian refugees hosted by Turkey live in the affected Turkish region.
The earthquakes that struck both nations on February 6 have left more than 45,000 dead, most of them Turks. It is estimated that tens of thousands of bodies remain under the rubble.
Thirteen days after the crash, when there is less chance of finding survivors, rescuers are even using trained rats to find people alive.
Although hope of finding survivors fades after 72 hours – more than 90% of earthquake survivors are rescued within three days, another was rescued on Friday. It is a 45-year-old man, in Hatay province. This, together with the rescues of yesterday Saturday, maintain some hope in the families of the disappeared.
Other surprising rescues
Anadolu Agency reported that also in Nurdag, a six-month pregnant woman was rescued alive after spending 115 hours under a tumble of rubble. And an hour later, they saved her six-year-old daughter. On the other hand, they saved a teenager who survived by drinking her own urine.
Although there are many news of hopeful bailouts in Turkey and Syria , probably the most symbolic is that of Ayawhich in Arabic means “sign of God”, a baby who was born under the rubble of the five-story building where her family lived and who buried her mother, her brothers and her father.
Against all odds, the girl was born healthy, with no spinal damage, and survived for about 10 hours.
Rescuers discovered the girl while digging for survivors. The baby lay next to the body of her mother, Afraa Abu Hadiya, connected by her umbilical cord.
