Third National Multi-Hazard Drill: when will it be, what time and how can you participate

“Organized we are more prepared” is the motto of Third National Multi-Hazard Drillscheduled by the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) for this Monday, November 7 from 8:00 p.m., being the last of the year in accordance with the provisions of Ministerial Resolution 013-2022-PCM.

In this note we explain what a Multi-Hazard Drill is, why it will be held this November 7, in which cities and how to prepare to participate satisfactorily:

What is a Multi-Hazard Drill

Multi-Hazard Drill means that each department and province chooses the danger on which you will practice the answer. They can be: earthquake, earthquake followed by tsunami, intense rains and their associated dangers, such as flooding, mudslide, alluvium, among others; landslides, landslides, avalanches, avalanches/alluvium, low temperatures, volcanic activity, spills of dangerous substances and forest fires.

Most coastal departments, for example, respond to earthquakes followed by tsunamis, while the highlands and jungle departments will respond to other hazards such as landslides, forest fires, volcanic activity and spills of hazardous substances, among others.

Who participates and how?

In this drill, the preparation of the families and communities, promoting the participation of all people at the national level in its diversity of conditions.

For the drill, the practice of various prevention exercises has been planned, such as the evacuation to safe areas and assembly points established by regional and local authoritiesaccording to the geography of its jurisdiction, considering the biosecurity measures to ensure the safety of the population.

To participate, follow these recommendations from Indeci:

• Moment 1: be attentive to the sound of horns, bells or whistles that warn of the start of the drill and represent the occurrence of the earthquake.
• Moment 2: locate internal safe zones in case of earthquake during the first two minutes. Drop and cover to prepare for very strong earthquakes that prevent standing.
• Moment 3: exit via evacuation routes to an external safe zone respecting social distance. In the event of a tsunami, for example, evacuate to higher ground.

It is also recommended follow the instructions of authorities or volunteers until the end of the drill.

Why will it be held on November 7?

The National Multi-Hazard Drill will take place on Monday, November 7, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. because on Saturday, November 5, World Tsunami Awareness Day is commemorateddate instituted by the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization.

Strong earthquake in Lambayeque

The Authorities reported that an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 and a tsunami will affect the Lambayeque region this Monday, November 7, at 8:00 p.m., as part of the National Multihazard Drill programmed by Civil Defense, in coordination with the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER).

The head of the Lambayeque COER, José Muga Vásquez, pointed out that coordination is already being carried out with the authorities and the Indeci platform for this drill, which will have the Lagunas district (Mocupe) as the focal area for operations.

Lambayeque’s degree of vulnerability is high due to its multiple precarious constructions and old mansions. “Unfortunately we anticipate that there will be many losses. If there is no prevention in advance, we can have unfortunate consequences”, Muga Vasquez pointed out.
