SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) advertisement that the filming of the documentary concluded Mijainabout the five-time Olympic champion Mijaín López and its premiere is close, although they did not reveal when it will happen.
The film is dedicated to Lopez and is about “the Horseshoe Giant in his last Olympic combat and how the Homeland and its people followed him,” said Alexis Triana, president of the ICAIC, optimistically. “It will be an extraordinary premiere!” he added.
The project is a co-production of ICAIC and D’Alma Film, with the support of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) and Cuban Television.
It was directed by Rolando Almirante and the photography was done by Ángel Alderete.
The official press has celebrated the documentary as an opportunity to have “a deep and authentic look” at the life and career of the Greco-Roman wrestler.
Mijaín López established himself as a definitive legend by defeating fellow Cuban (nationalized Chilean) Yasmani Acosta by a score of 6-0 in the 130 kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
López, who won his fifth consecutive Olympic gold, had already been crowned champion in Beijing, London, Rio, Tokyo and Paris in the same event. No one in the history of the Olympics had achieved such a record.
At the end of the historic fight, he spoke by telephone with Miguel Díaz-Canel, who congratulated him on the victory.
Upon his arrival in Cuba, he paid tribute to the dictator Fidel Castro in a public event during the reception that the regime had prepared for the Olympic athletes upon their arrival in Havana.
On the esplanade of La Piragua, in the capital’s Vedado, the flag bearer of the delegation and five-time Olympic champion had to address the public and in his triumphant speech he did not stop celebrating Fidel Castro.
“We are two, three minutes away from a birthday which is very special, from our undefeated commander Fidel Castro Ruz. I believe that with our presence here, we are reaffirming all the continuity that he left here in this country. And we are happy to arrive here and represent our people, today, tomorrow and always,” said the valiant defender of the regime, in an event that clearly sought to coincide the arrival of Cubans to the country with Castro’s birth.
So dear to the regime, the Cuban wrestler, who deserved a Mercedes Benz years ago for his Olympic exploits, professes his affection for the Cuban rulers without hesitation.
