Open Polls hopes that during the first days of next April the resolution will be approved to extend the mandate of the Group of Experts so that they continue to investigate the human rights situation in the Central American country. The Council began on February 27 and will end on April 4, 2023.
Likewise, the United Nations High Commissioner, Volker Türk, will present an oral update on Nicaragua on March 3, after which an interactive dialogue will be opened with the participation of States and Nicaraguan civil society.
In this first report, the Group of Experts is expected to present the findings after a year of research on the human rights situation in the country.
“We hope that the Member States of the Human Rights Council support the renewal of the mandate of the Group of Experts for two years, because in this context where civil society is so limited, it is important to continue investigating crimes against humanity committed by the State of Nicaragua. , including the latest events of exile and stripping of nationality,” said Olga Valle, director of Urnas Abiertas.
He added that “we continue to denounce that more than 35 people continue to be arbitrarily detained and that Nicaragua is the victim of a regime that violates human rights and has committed 2 electoral frauds usurping the government at the national and local levels.”
