Through the creation of the National Human Rights Observatory of the LGBTIQ+ Population, the Ombudsman’s Office seeks to guarantee respect for these people.
The Ombudsman announced the creation of this Observatory with the signing of indicators that can provide evidence of situations that may or may not arise for this group of society.
The document recalls that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in article 1 states that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”, and that stigma, prejudice, discrimination, hate speech and crimes violate human rights. humans. and the fundamental freedoms for the recognition, enjoyment and exercise of rights.
It emphasizes that in terms of rights, specific laws have not yet been created for the protection of LGTBIQ+ people and Panama does not have specific regulations in its legal system that protect said rights; however, it has ratified conventions that include the entire population, with equality and non-discrimination.
With this agreement, the National Human Rights Observatory of the LGBTIQ+ Population is also created, an entity that will be coordinated by the Ombudsman’s Office and will be made up of the following civil society organizations, including: EDERDI, ANH, Wigudun Galu Association, AHMNP, Trans Diverse Association, APPT, IPDH, Hombres Trans Panama, Iguales Foundation, PFLAG Panama, CIMUF and others that join the initiative.
The main objective of the National Observatory for Human Rights of the LGBTIQ+ Population is to make visible the violations of human rights of this population, including hate speech and crimes that affect the dignity of people in the country.
