Last week, Andrés Hurtado was transferred to the Lurigancho prison, where he must serve 18 months of preventive detention while he is investigated for alleged crimes of money laundering and influence peddling. Given this situation, his lawyer, Elio Riera, announced that today he will present an appeal to the sentence, in an attempt to reverse the judicial decision.
In an interview with Canal N, Elio Riera detailed that the appeal evaluation process could take approximately a month. “Since an inmate is in jail, the hearing would be scheduled for a month”stated the lawyer, alluding to the estimated period for the judicial system to determine whether the appeal presented by Hurtado’s defense is accepted.
Riera also mentioned that he has spoken with Hurtado, who, despite the situation, maintains high expectations regarding the progress of the appeal.
The lawyer emphasized the existence of humanitarian reasons that could favor his client, highlighting that Hurtado has a daughter under the age of ten in his care. Under this argument, he considers that other alternative measures should be implemented to continue the investigation without the need to keep him in prison.
During the interview, Riera was also asked about the recent statement issued by Elmer Abraham Mina, known as the “cashier” of “Chibolín”, who was interviewed by the Cuarto Poder program. However, the lawyer clarified that he has not followed the interview and that he is not guided by journalistic reports in his legal strategies. “I am not guided by the reports. Besides, this week we have dedicated ourselves to working exclusively on the appeal for preventive detention,” declared Riera.
