They also warned that selling a vehicle with the guide changed is not only dangerous, but also a scam for the consumer who pays thousands of pesos for a “converted maco.”

Since sooner rather than later it could cause an accident on the road, since they easily lose stability, putting the lives of many at risk.

After being consulted in this respect, some vehicle dealers affirmed that the importation and commercialization of this type of car obviously leaves the State with more loss than benefits.

This, because they do not pay the corresponding tariffs, negatively impacts the environment and contributes to the increase in traffic accident statistics in the country and deaths from that cause.

In this regard, they called on Ministers Ito Bisonó, of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, Orlando Jorge Mera, of Environment, and Jochy Vicente, of Finance, to take measures regarding this sector.

Similarly, they warned the National Council of Export Free Zones, to backtrack on application No.1589-2022, made by the company Conversiones del Caribe, SRL with the aim of settling in the Quisqueya Industrial Free Zone without paying the corresponding taxes, take advantage of the tax benefits and incentives of Law 8-90, and import junk vehicles from Japan and dedicate themselves to the conversion of Japanese vehicle guides, which, as they explained, represents an attack on the Dominican Republic.
They indicated “The National Council of Export Free Zones should not abide by said request since any operation of reversing the steering wheel violates the safety conditions with which said vehicle was designed by the manufacturer, becoming a danger for its drivers, and a threat to public safety” they explained.
