
The NGO Justice, Encounter and Forgiveness (JEP) warned this Thursday that 91 political prisoners in the country suffer from “serious illnesses” and reported that the “progressive physical deterioration” of these detainees is the product of a “form of violence structural”.
The lawyer and general coordinator of the NGO, Martha Tineodetailed that there is “at least 8 cases of advanced cancer”with diagnoses like prostate adenocarcinoma, small cell lung cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, epithelioid sarcoma, pancreatic and brain tumors.
Likewise, they have identified “more than 20 prisoners with heart diseases”among them acute coronary syndromes, congestive heart failure, severe arrhythmias and chronic hypertensionin addition to diabetes and chronic kidney failure.
“Some have irreversible kidney damage either persistent urinary tract infectionsto the point of permanently need urinary catheters, but they don’t receive them either they do not have resources to acquire them”Tineo noted.
The NGO denounced the “systematic denial of medical care”he non-compliance with treatments and the exposure to unhealthy conditions in Venezuelan prisons, which constitutes a “direct violation of the right to life and personal integrity”.
He also warned that the “progressive physical deterioration” of those detained “It is not a collateral effect, but a form of structural violence”.
“When the State turns illness into punishmentand negligence in methoda silent torture scenario that requires a urgent response from national and international human rights organizations”, stated the organization.
JEP counts 1,084 political prisoners in Venezuelaa figure higher than that of Criminal Forumwhich reports 893 detained for political reasons.
