They urge avoiding alcohol consumption in minors and pregnant women

He Ministry of Public Health this Tuesday urged the population to prevent the consumption of alcoholic beveragesespecially in minors and pregnant women, as well as maintaining a safe and balanced diet during the festivities of Christmas and New Year’s, with the aim of avoiding poisoning and other health complications.

The exhortation was made by the Dr. Patricia Grullónin charge of the Nutrition Division of the Ministry of Health, and the child nutritionist Massiel Álvarez.

Grullón explained that the Christmas It is usually associated with an increase in the consumption of food and drinks outside the usual routine, so he recommended prioritizing moderation, planning and adequate hydration, preferably with water.

“During the Christmas festivities it is not about prohibiting foodbut about planning, moderating portions and maintaining a good hydrationso that families can enjoy without compromising their health,” he indicated in a press release.

Likewise, he highlighted the importance of stay active through walks, family outings and other activities such as dancing, which help burn calories.

Alcohol and its risks

As for the alcohol consumptionthe specialists warned about the serious risks that represents for the minors and pregnant women, since it can cause poisoning, affect fetal development and generate irreversible consequences for health, which is why they urged exercising responsible supervision during the celebrations.

“The alcoholic beverages They are not suitable for children or pregnant women; “Its consumption represents a risk to health and can generate serious consequences, so it is essential that adults prevent and supervise responsibly during these celebrations,” warned Álvarez.

  • The child nutritionist referred to the organization of children’s eating during the holidays, and recommended structuring feeding times with a good breakfast, a light snack, a complete lunch and avoiding snacks in the afternoon.

Take care of the older adults

Both specialists highlighted the need to protect the health of older adultsoffering food easy to chew and digest, controlling the consumption of salt, fats and sugars, and preventing them from remaining for long periods without eating.

Safety of the food

Dr. Grullón called to take care of the safety of foodguaranteeing adequate hygiene in the preparation, conservation and handling of meals, to prevent diseases transmitted by foodespecially in children, pregnant women and older adultsand people with chronic diseases, who have a higher risk of complications.

The health professionals agreed in pointing out that the Christmas Eve dinner and New Year must be assumed as a space of family connectionfree of technological distractions, that allows sharing, talking and strengthening ties, a practice that should be applied throughout the year.

In that order, they called to enjoy the festivities responsibly, and promote habits healthy that contribute to the well-being of the entire family.
