They unveil a plaque in tribute to the late Cuban poet Ángel Cuadra

MIAMI, United States. — A plaque in memory of the late Cuban poet and anti-communist fighter Ángel Cuadra Landrove was unveiled this Saturday on the grounds of the Félix Varela Park in this city.

The tribute It was produced at the initiative of the PEN Club of Cuban Writers in Exile, of which Cuadra Landrove was the founder, and had the support of Miami-Dade Commissioner Javier Souto.

On the tarja is engraved, in Spanish and English, a brief review of the life and career of the Cuban poet.

“Poet of great passion for the word and ally of freedom. He spent 15 years in the communist prisons of Cuba. He was declared an Honorary Member by Swedish PEN and a Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International. Renowned poet, essayist and journalist, who promoted culture among the captive brothers. In exile, he was among the founders of the Ex─Club, the Institute of Cuban Historical Memory Against Totalitarianism and the PEN of Cuban Writers in Exile, tribunes from where he fought until his last breath for Cuba”.

Ángel Cuadra Landrove was born in Havana on August 29, 1931. He actively fought against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and later against that of Fidel Castro, for which he was imprisoned in 1967. Before going into exile, he spent 15 years in prison . His texts, critical of the communist system, were described by the Cuban regime as “subversive activity.”

He was one of the founders and first president of the PEN CLUB of Cuban Writers in Exile and, thanks to the quality of his poetic work, he obtained several awards, among them the prestigious “Amantes de Teruel Award”, which is awarded annually by the Teruel City Council. Spanish city.

His works include Step (1959), Impromptus (1977), That sadness that floods us (1985), Fantasy for Friday (1985), Signs and dreams (1988), Violent requiem by Juan Palach (1989), The inevitable voice (1994), Ten hidden sonnets (2000) and The voice in time: Poetic anthology (1957-2018).

Ángel Cuadra Landrove died in Miami on February 13, 2021 at the age of 89.
