Miami.- Cuban reporter and activist Angel Cuza He was transferred to the Maximum Combined Security Prison of the East, in Havana, where he remains in provisional prison under charges of illegal possession of weapons and other alleged crimes against state security.

The complaint was confirmed to Cubanet by Ana Castillo, mother of the activist’s daughter, who received a phone call from Cuza from the prison. In statements a CubanetAna explained that the authorities try to blame him for carrying a single bullet, which Cuza has been stored as a collectible and amulet, but that he does not have any firearm.

“The projectile had in his wallet for years. The police had seen him before,” said Castillo, who stressed that there is no weapon involved in the case. In addition, the ex -partner of Cuza related the difficulties of finding legal representation because it is a political case.

In Cuba, gun -related crimes can lead to sentences of up to 12 years of deprivation of liberty. The so -called “crimes against state security” cover generic charges that the regime uses to criminalize dissent, including rebellion, sedition, sabotage and enemy propaganda.

Cuza was arrested in the middle of a repressive wave unleashed during the official celebrations of July 26, according to the Cultural Rights Observatory.

His detention has also deeply affected his family environment. His mother, who suffers schizophrenia and lives alone, depended completely on him as a caregiver. “He is alone, affected, and he was his only support,” said Ana Castillo.

It is not the first time that Angel Cuza faces prison for political reasons. In November 2023 he was sentenced to one year and six months for “public disorder” and released in May 2024. Before, in 2021, he turned eight months in jail after participating in a peaceful protest on Bishop Street, in Old Havana, in support of the San Isidro movement and the artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara.
