They seize more than 2,200 cigarettes from a traveler at the Havana airport

Tabacos decomisados en aeropuerto de La Habana

This case joins others recently reported on the Island regarding frustrated trafficking attempts, generally of drugs.

LIMA, Peru – Customs authorities at the capital’s José Martí International Airport intercepted an attempt to traffic tobacco out of Cuba. This was reported this weekend via X (formerly Twitter) Wiliam Pérez González, first vice chief of the General Customs of the Republic (AGR).

“Cuban Customs detects more than 2,200 tobacco of different brands upon leaving the country, through the Havana airport,” the manager reported.

According to the images released by Pérez González, a good part of the tobaccos were of the Cohíba brand and the seized subject transported them inside suitcases, wrapped in newspaper.

“Customs forces are always alert in the fight against illegal acts for a secure border,” the publication highlights.

As usual, authorities did not provide details about the source of the tobacco, the passenger’s itinerary or whether there were any related arrests.

This case joins others recently reported on the Island about frustrated trafficking attempts, generally of drugs, where substances have been found hidden in religious figures, electric showers, water motors, jelly beans, cigarettes and even in a person’s body.

The opacity in this type of reports is not new: authorities often omit key data about the chain of custody, subsequent investigations or the judicial fate of those involved. This selective handling of information reinforces criticism about the propaganda use of these seizures, which rarely include verifiable details.

In a context of economic crisis and international isolation, the regime seeks to project abroad an image of a “safe country” with absolute control of its borders, although this story omits the structural flaws and lack of transparency in the management of these cases.
