In the midst of pain and shock, family, friends and classmates said goodbye this holiday Monday, November 3, to Jaime Esteban Moreno Jaramillothe 20-year-old young man and student at the Universidad de los Andes who was murdered during a Halloween party in the early hours of October 31. The funeral was held at Gaviria Funeral Homein Bogotá, and later his remains were buried in the Gardens of Peace Cemeteryin a ceremony full of sadness and messages of justice.
During the funeral, several relatives remembered Jaime Esteban as a happy young man, passionate about music and committed to his studies. His friends wore t-shirts with his name and photographs that evoked moments shared at university and in cultural activities. On social networks, the student community of Los Andes has expressed its indignation and demanded that the authorities conduct a quick and transparent investigation to clarify the events surrounding his death.
According to the first versions, the young man was attacked by other attendees at the party after an argument. Although the Bogotá Metropolitan Police is already moving forward with the collection of testimonies and analysis of security cameras. Jaime Esteban’s family asked for respect for his memory and that his case not remain unpunished, while the university expressed its solidarity and support at this difficult time.

With deep pain, the parents of Jaime Esteban Moreno Jaramillo, the young systems engineering student at the Universidad de los Andes who died in the midst of violent events in Bogotá, released a statement in which they express their immense regret and cry for justice for what happened.

“Today we face the worst pain that a father, a mother and a family can experience,” begins the text signed by Mónica Jaramillo Buitrago and Jaime Alberto Moreno Gutiérrez, who described the events as “violent and excessive” and confirmed that the case is already in the hands of the Attorney General’s Office.
The parents remembered their son as a bright, generous and deeply human young man. “He was the eldest son in our house, with his younger brother they were the best friends and they had each other,” they expressed. Jaime Esteban, barely 20 years old, was in his seventh semester and was described as “the most beautiful person, an excellent human being, wonderful not only for his family but for everyone who knew him.”
The young man was part of the chess team at the University and, previously, at the San Bartolomé La Merced school, where he completed all his academic training and graduated in 2022. In addition, he was fluent in English, was preparing for an exchange in Finland and was a passionate programmer, talented in developing mobile applications.
“He was a wonderful and irreplaceable being, an authentic and Catholic young man who left a family completely destroyed. His dreams, his plans, his projects were cut off,” the statement says. The parents expressed their incomprehension in the face of an event that they described as brutal and devastating.
Finally, the Moreno Jaramillo family called on the authorities to clarify the crime: “We trust in Colombian justice, we pray that justice is done and that those responsible receive the full weight of the law.”
