They save Demartini, but censor Mucho

Rómulo Mucho.

The Plenary Session of Congress endorsed the request of the informal and illegal miners – who for a week have surrounded Parliament and blocked the roads in the south of the country, under the slogan of expanding the Reinfo -, and removed from office, on the afternoon yesterday, to the Minister of Energy and Mines (Minem), Rómulo Mucho, who tried to solve the problem of mining formalization.

With 79 votes in favor, 13 against and four abstentions, the Plenary decided to censure the head of Minem, and preferred to save the life of the Minister of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis), Julio Demartini, who is politically responsible for the delivery of food thousands of children from the Qali Warma program in poor condition.

In his case, 66 votes were not reached for him to be removed. The result of the vote was 33 votes in favor, 34 against and 23 abstentions.

INFORMAL MINERS IN MATCHES

Since last Thursday the 21st the Fuerza Popular (FP) bench received the leaders of the National Confederation of Small Mining and Artisanal Mining of Peru (Confemin Perú)—the union that leads the protest of informal miners in front of Congress—the continuity of Much began to hang in the balance.

The next day, FP presented the motion of censure against him after the explanation of the head of Minem in the plenary session about the ASM law.

Peru21 was able to confirm that two leaders and two legal advisors of Confemin are active in four political parties, and two of them have seats in the current Congress. Its legislators voted in favor of censuring Mucho.

This is the case of Máximo Franco, president of said union, who is a member of Renovación Popular, and Adolfo Valverde, a member of Perú Libre (PL).

Two other members of that union, José Farfán (legal advisor) and Johnny Taboada (leader), are active in Perú Moderno and Ahora Nación—by Alfonso López Chau—, respectively.

This medium has also been able to confirm that the RP bench has presented, in the Energy Commission, an opinion to extend the Reinfo for six months, a proposal similar to the one presented by Mucho to Parliament.

THEY WANT TO EXTEND THE REINFO FOR TWO YEARS

On the other hand, the Energy Commission, after discussing the Reinfo extension report—which proposes extending it up to two years—decided to continue the debate this Thursday.

Former Minister of Economy Luis Miguel Castilla pointed out that although Mucho’s censorship was due to “the lack of diligence in handling the illegal mining crisis,” there is still concern that said registry could be extended for two more years, which benefits the illegal mining, as Peru21 has denounced.

I KNEW THAT

-The vice president of Congress, Patricia Juárez, said that Mucho “lacked proactivity to reach a consensus with the MAPE Law and Reinfo.”

-“Illegal mining has infiltrated many politicians, that is why we need a comprehensive solution,” said Luis Felipe Cantuarias, president of the Peruvian Hydrocarbons Society.
