They reveal a figure of Colombian flowers exported to the US for Valentine's Day: there was an increase

Colombia reaffirmed its position as one of the largest flower suppliers for the United States, with more than 65,000 tons exported within the framework of Valentine’s Day of 2025. This figure represents a growth of 13 % compared to the same period of the previous year , according to data from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) and the Colombian Association of Flower Exporters (Assocolflores).

According to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture, 80 % of Colombian flowers of flowers are destined for the United States, which makes it the main market in this sector.

On the other hand, Augusto Solano, president of Assocolflores, highlighted the relevance of this industry for the rural areas of the country: «When the flowers of Colombia travel to accompany this celebration in more than 100 countries, especially to the United States, it is the work of 200 thousand people from 116 municipalities in the country which is really consolidated ».

Export of Colombian flowers grew by 12 % in 2024 and strengthened its presence in international markets

To guarantee the quality of the exported flowers, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) supervised the shipping process of 900 million stems. Of these exports, 92 % was carried out by air, while 8 % were sent by maritime transport to markets such as the United Kingdom, Chile, Australia and Japan.

The Colombian flower sector closed 2024 with a 12 %growth, reaching 2,358 million dollars in exports. This dynamism was driven by market diversification, with notable increases in United Arab Emirates (+77.5 %) and Switzerland (+232.7 %), strengthening the international presence of Colombian floriculture.

In addition to its economic impact, this industry represents 15 % of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) agricultural and is a key source of employment. Of the 200 thousand jobs it generates, 110 thousand are direct and 90 thousand indirect. A relevant fact is that 60 % of these jobs are occupied by women, and 55 % corresponds to heads of family, which highlights their role in the social development of the country.
