Some tourists – between Peruvians and foreigners – are being held by a group of community members from Cuninico, in the district of Urarinas, as reported by RPP this Thursday, November 3. The communities of that area block the transit of any type of vessel on the Marañón River as a protest measure for the oil spill that occurred on September 16 in the Cuninico ravine, Loreto region.
In statements to the aforementioned media, Ángela Ramírez, one of those detained, indicated that there are about 150 people detained. The woman assured that among the people detained there are children and the elderly, who are in two rafts.
The reason for retaining them, according to Ramírez, would be because the community members of Cuninico seek the attention of the Government in order to provide a solution to their demands.
“They told us that it was because they seek the attention of the State for the solution of the oil spill and that, as a result, there are now two deceased children and a woman”Angela stated.
He added that the community members would keep the tourists detained between 6 to 8 days or until a solution is achieved with the presence of some State authority.
Among those detained are citizens of the United States, Spain, France, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, RPP specified. “The apu himself came in person on a raft. The apu said that we would spend the night and he would come to see us at eight in the morningAngela commented.
