Political parties are already notified. Internal elections or nothing. The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) took a key step in the electoral calendar for the 2026 general elections when publishing the regulations that will regulate the internal elections of political organizations. The standard appeared in the Official Gazette El Peruano, establishes how the groups must be organized to select their candidacies in the coming months.
One of the central aspects of the regulation is the election of the candidates on November 30, 2025, when the parties will define, according to the mechanism they choose – open, closed or by delegates -, to whom they will seek a seat in the congress, the Senate or the Andean Parliament, as well as its presidential formula.
Political organizations have until September 1 to inform the ONPE which voting modality will apply, if it will be national or regional, and how many delegates will choose, if they opt for that way. If they do not do so in that period, they will be out of the process.
The open elections allow vote to the members of the party and any citizen who without the need to be affiliated is registered with them to be able to participate in this election; In the closed elections only their affiliates participate, while in the indirect ones they can vote only their delegates.
In addition, it is established that the candidacies must be presented by the central electoral bodies of each organization before November 7, 2025, through a digital platform enabled by the ONPE. People who apply must be affiliated with their party until July 12 of this year and appear in the JNE Political Organizations Registry (ROP).
This election day will take place between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, and the ONPE will publish the results on its official website. The agency will also be responsible for coordinating with the forces of order to guarantee security during the process. A total of 43 political parties are enabled to participate in this process.
