
A hundred people participated this Saturday in a march in Barcelona organized by the party of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado, Sell Venezuelain support of the opposition and “peace and freedom” in the Latin American country.
Before Machado receives the award at a ceremony in Oslo next Wednesday, the group called this weekend for rallies in cities around the world, several of them in Spain.
The Barcelona protesters left the Columbus monument carrying lit lights “as a symbol of hope and transition to democracy”, to walk through the streets of the city until they reached the statue of Simón Bolívar, in the Olympic Village.
The conveners praised Machado’s “defense of democratic rights” and “its role in seeking a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
“For there to be peace and democracy in Venezuela, human rights must also be respected,” a spokesperson for the organizers told EFE.
According to the NGO Foro Penal, In November there were 884 political prisoners in Venezuelaof which 85 have another citizenship or dual nationality.
“We call to celebrate that this Nobel Peace Prize, although María Corina Machado will receive it, is a prize that all Venezuelans make ours, for more than twenty years of struggle for the restoration of freedom,” the spokesperson said.
Participants in the march carried banners that read slogans such as: “The Nobel is mine” and “The Nobel belongs to all Venezuelans.”
In Spain, rallies are planned in more than twenty cities, including Madrid, Alicante, Zaragoza and Valencia, in addition to demonstrations in various European capitals, Australia, Canada and Latin America.
